Kalaw Trekking

Kalaw is one of the famous hill town of Shan state and is inhabited by only a few thousand people, originating from the various ethnic groups of Myanmar. Native belles wear colorful, locally woven by national costume.
The British government, during the colonial period, created Kalaw as a summer resort hill station. By visiting Kalaw you can feel the atmosphere of past colonial times.
Trekking around Kalaw can vary from a one-day hike to five-day treks into the surrounding hills. The plateau near Kalaw inhabit by Palaung and Pa-O (or Black Karen) tribes. Intha, Shan, Taungthu, Taung-yo, Danu and Bamar people occupy the mountains to the north and east. Minorities come into town on Kalaw’s market day, which comes around every five days. On the way home, their woven backpack baskets may be filled with cheroots (Burmese cigars), candles and treats for the children. Several nearby villages can be visited in half-day or whole-day hikes. One advantage of overnight treks is that by evening time people are back home in the village after spending a day tending to the fields. Lodging is usually in long houses, occasionally in monasteries.
