Before the Mandalay city, the royal capital of upper Myanmar is Amarapua and King Minn Done ruled only about "4" years.Then he tried to found the new city and accordingly he started his foundation in 1857. When the King Minn Done built the city he might have "3" reasons to built the city.

The first was that, most Myanmar Kings and Queens they want to take pride on their meritorious deeds. King Minn Done also wanted to take pride and he want to left behind his good name by his great deeds. It is the first reason.

The second reason was that, in those days one of the rumor was in the air, that is "a man who want to get long life must be take the shelter of the Mandalay hill" so that the King chose the site at the foot of the Mandalay hill.

The third reason was the main and it concern to political affairs because at that time the capital of the country was Amarapura and the area of the city was long and narrow. Then the city was surrounded by three rivers (Irrawaddy, Dotehtawaddy, and Mattaya). If the British wanted to conquer to the upper Myanmar (Burma) they could easily be marched their battle along the Irrawaddy river route, so that the King worried for the security of the capital and the influence of British.

Finally for those many reasons, the King chose the site and decided to found the new city at the foot of the Mandela hill. At the same time of the construction of the city, the King also started another "6" foundations at new site. So that the King Minn Done did altogether "7" deeds they are

• The new Mandalay city
• The city wall and moat
• Kutho Daw pagoda (the great bounty)
• Pitikat Tike (Library of Buddhist Canons)
• Maha Atula Waiyan Monastery "33" of holy rest house
• Sima or ordination hall

 

The foundation of new city had started at 1857 and some people and the King royal court gradually shifted since 1856. After the construction, the king shared the land to his people according to their profession. Ex the gold leaf quarter for gold leaf maker, the bamboo quarter for bamboo sellers, and tailors compound, China town for Chinese, guard quarter, sword holder quarter, spare holder quarter, and etc. However King Minn Done founded the city as the royal and great capital of Myanmar in 1859.
