  A Glimpse of Myanmar's Artistic lacquer Wares  
   
 
The Royal Flower Of Bagan ( Lacquerware)
     In the days of Myanmar's Kings, lacquer wares used to be highly appreciated on a par with jewels and silk. Thus, this item was usually included in the list of gifts presented to the foreign missions and diplomats at that time. Besides, lacquer-coated cases and boxes were used for keeping the Court chronicals and jewels. This is not to say that lacquer ware were the royal exclusive use in those days.

The production of making lacquer ware in Myanmar could be generally sub- divided into three categories;
  • Production of plain ware
  • Production of Black ware
  • Production of decorative lacquer ware
  • The important raw materials
  • Bamboo
  • Teak, Woods
  • Ponny tail
  • Yellow orpiment
  • Indigo
  • Mariuric Sulphide (Vermillion)
  • Lacquer juce or Resin
  • The process of Making Lacquerware

First step (Production of plain ware)
Bamboo is cut out into pieces and slice into very thin bamboo sticks. Then they are coil or weave to get their needed size and shape. This step is only to make plain ware.

Second Step (Production of Black ware)
Outer surface is coated with lacquer juice and & put them into underground cell for about "3" days After that just do the same to inner surface. Then have to smooth them with "V" shape knife. Coated again with lacquer juice and put again into underground cellers for a bout "3" days. After "3"days put them out and rub with sand paper and rough stone. Then put them into underground about 3- 5 days.

Third step (polishing)
The step is to be polished those, which were put out from underground cellers. Rub with stone power, teak power and wood power. In rubbing with those things, have to be rub in step by step to get smooth and smooth surface. Then, coated to inner surface with vermillion red and pure lacquer juice.

Fourth Step;( Production of decorative lacquer ware)
Now it is time to paint, Firstly coated the whole surface with glue and the glue get from Accacia tree, Desinger etched the lines by using sharp iron pin. The colors must be mixded with resin from neem tree as the mordant. Then take the color with finger and rub into the lines with hand. When the color dried wash with water and rub again with paddy husk. The color will remain.
